Dry Eyes

Dry Eyes
"Dry eyes" is a condition that occurs when tears do not meet the moisture requirement of the eyes, which finally results in excessive dryness in the eyes. Technically dry eyes are termed as "xeropthalmia," "Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS)" or "dry eyes syndrome."
We shall discuss this health complication in detail in the upcoming content.
Types of Dry Eyes
1) Aqueous tear-deficient dry eye- The lacrimal glands do not produce an adequate watery component of tears to lubricate the eye surface.
2) Evaporative dry eye- The meibomian glands are inflamed due to which the rate of evaporation of tears is increased
Symptoms associated with Dry Eyes
Apart from feeling a weird dryness in and around the eyes, the person will also suffer from the following symptoms
Sensing that something is always stuck in your eyes
Redness in eyes
Burning and itching of eyes
Eyes feel tired and tensed
Accumulation of mucus in and around eyes
Blurry vision and difficulty in focusing
Causes of Dry Eyes
The tear film comprises three layers: the outer oily layer, the watery middle layer, and the inner mucus layer; abnormality in these three layers gives rise to dry eyes. There are several underlying reasons associated with dry eye syndrome. We explain them below:
Drying of eyes and decreased tear production is a side effect of aging, especially after 50 and it's also common in menopausal women
It can happen when the oil glands (meibomian glands) of the eyes are clogged, or the lacrimal glands (tears) do not produce sufficient tear
"Dry eyes" is one of the side effects of vitamin A deficiency, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid problems, etc.
Allergies and inflammation in cornea and conjunctiva
Medications used during hormone replacement therapy, for treating high blood pressure, antidepressants, antihistamines, acne, etc. also cause dry eyes
Eye surgeries like LASIK and prolonged use of contact lens
Prolonged exposure to smoke, wind, pollutants, dry environment and computer
Diagnosis of Dry Eyes
Your eye doctor will examine your eyes by applying various techniques and procedures. During this process, he/she will also ask questions regarding your medical history.
Schirmer test- This test is done to measure the volume of tears produced by your eyes by placing blotting strips under the lower eyelids for 5 minutes. The quantity of tears soaked by strip is then measured.
Dry eyes are also diagnosed with special dye drops used on the eyes, which produce various staining patterns on the cornea. These stains form the measure for determining the time taken for the tears to evaporate.
Treatment of Dry Eyes
Wide range of treatment options are there for dry eyes which depend entirely on the underlying cause:
Medicines like prescription eye drops are advised to keep the eyes moist and protect from inflammation. Secondly, antibiotics are used to treat eyelid and corneal abnormalities. Eye inserts or artificial tears also inserted by the doctor to lubricate the eyes. Cyclosporine is widely used to treat dry eyes.
Several "tear conservation" strategies are used like – permanent or temporary blocking of tear channels with punctual plugs or performing a heat treatment called thermal cautery. Unblocking the oil glands by applying thermal pulsation is also done by ophthalmologists.
If dry eyes are a side effect of various other complications like Sjogren's syndrome or rheumatoid arthritis, your eye doctor might refer you to specialty doctors.
What to Expect?
Dry eye conditions are treatable over time. There are no as such pre preparations needed before the check-up. However, if you have severe abnormalities in eyelids, then surgery may be suggested by your doctor.
Apart from getting the treatments done, make sure your diet is rich in foods containing vitamin E and omega 3-fatty acids. Also, wash your eyes frequently with clean and cold water for the health of your eyes.

Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy is an abnormal condition wherein the fertilized egg stays in the fallopian tube instead of moving into the uterus and attaching it to the uterus lining. Affecting one woman out of every 50 is a dangerous condition wherein the fallopian tube stretches with time, causing terrible pain in the abdomen and pelvic area.

Signs and Symptoms of Ectopic Pregnancy

The symptoms that form the basis of the diagnosis of Ectopic pregnancy are:

  • Unusual abdominal pain
  • Mild or abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Severe, sharp pain in the lower abdomen
  • Dizziness and fainting
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Stabbing pain in shoulder and neck
  • Sharp pain in the pelvis

Causes of Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy is often caused due defects in the fallopian tube that hinders the movement of the fertilized egg into the uterus. It might also be caused due to congenital abnormality in the fallopian tube or might also result from an unsuccessful tubal ligation.

Below are some more health conditions responsible for ectopic pregnancy:

  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Infertility treatments like IVF
  • Suffering from Pelvic Inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Use of intrauterine device (IUD) during sexual intercourse
  • Surgery in the fallopian tube and pelvic treatments
  • Endometriosis (propagation of the endometrial tissue in the uterus lining) and fibroid tumors
  • Women who are addicted to smoking and already have a medical history of ectopic pregnancy are at high risk of having a similar experience.

Diagnosis of Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy diagnosis begins with a pelvic examination. Symptoms like localized pain and tenderness in the abdomen are tested. Your doctor also senses for any growth inside the ovary and fallopian tube.

Then ultrasound is performed to check for pregnancy in the uterus approximately after six weeks of periods. A blood test is done to measure hCG levels. A low level of hCG and progesterone is an indication of ectopic pregnancy.

Bleeding from a ruptured fallopian tube is detected by a special diagnostic procedure known as culdocentesis. Your doctor will perform a localized inspection inside the topmost part of the vagina with the help of a needle.

Under emergency conditions like unbearable pain in the lower abdomen or profuse bleeding from the vagina, the patient should be immediately rushed to the hospital, and surgery might be the only safe option.

Treatment of Ectopic Pregnancy

Various options for treatment include:

Medicine:

If the ectopic pregnancy has been detected early, then medication like methotrexate is injected to halt growth and progression of the tissue and dissolve the growth.

hCG levels are monitored and normalized with drugs, and other minor abnormalities are treated after a series of blood tests.

Laparoscopy:

The ectopic tissue formed and minor damage in the fallopian tube is repaired easily with laparoscopic surgery.

Surgery:

If the fallopian tube, as well as the ovary, is damaged completely, then they are removed surgically.

What to Expect After Ectopic Pregnancy?

Your doctor will let you know about your chances of getting pregnant in the future, as well as the risks associated with it. However, if your fallopian tube is functional after the treatment, you can normally conceive after 6-7 months gap. You can also successfully conceive if you are have recovered from STDs (if it was the cause of your ectopic pregnancy).

Preventive Measures for Ectopic Pregnancy

Congenital defects are not under your control. However, several factors reduce the risks of ectopic pregnancy. Limit your sexual partners and always have safe sex. Use protections, especially condoms, to guard yourself against STDs and STIs. Quit smoking to conceive without complication.

Losing a baby is a challenge to deal with, thus express your feelings to your loved ones and receive emotional support. Consult with your doctor and hope for good news in the future.

Eye Exercises for Healthy Eyes

Eye Exercises for Healthy Eyes

An increase in computer usage, watching TV, and exposure to pollution have tremendously affected our eyes even though we may not realize. The need for eye exercises is not only to heal eye problems but also to keep our eyes healthy. You don’t need to churn out hours for doing these eye exercises, instead, try to remember and imply them while relaxing in office or during your leisure hours or maybe anytime and anywhere you want.

Let’s have a look at those eye exercises that would keep your eyes healthy.

Best Eye Exercises for Healthy Eyes

Palming

This is a relaxation technique for eyes. So do it whenever you are sitting idle or have been exhausted by seeing your computer screen. Rub your palm against each other until they warm up. Rest your elbows on a table and cup your eyes with your palm, with the fingers facing your forehead. Breathe while covering your eyes. Make sure your eyes are not in contact with your inner palm. Keep your eyes covered for 5-10 seconds and repeat the exercise 3-4 times.

Focus

Focusing could be done for three reasons – for more precise zoom and to improve near and far vision. Focus on your index finger without looking anywhere else and bring the finger closer to your nose without shifting your focus. Move your finger back and forth 2-3 times.

The second exercise is to focus on a very close object (10 inches) to your eyes and on another object that is very far, about 10-20 feet away. Look at the nearer object first, take a deep breath, and then focus immediately on the distant object. Repeat this about ten times.

Eye Tennis

So here you play tennis with your eyeballs. Amazed right? This is how you do it. Keep your head still. Look on the left side as far as you can, then gently swing your eyeballs to the right and look at the right side. Follow the same by swinging your eyeballs up and down. Other movements are: rotate your eyeballs in a clockwise motion and then anticlockwise motion. Repeat each exercise 10 times.

Figure Eight

Your eye muscles become intensely flexible with this exercise. Have you ever imagined drawing the numerical 8 with your eyeballs? If No, then try out. Please do not do it in haste; make your eye movements slow. Rest for a few seconds after tracing one set of 8 and then repeat for 5-6 times.

Blinking

Your eyes relax when you blink, and this exercise must be religiously practiced by those who need to sit before computers for hours after hours. Start blinking to de-stress your eyes. To begin with- blink every 3-4 seconds for 5 minutes, consciously. Then look at your computer for the next half an hour, keeping your blinking activity normal. You will surely feel the difference. Your eyes won’t feel heavy and stressed anymore.

The Slalom

This exercise is funny but indeed healthy for your eyes. Keep your head still and shut your one eye (e.g., left eye). Now, look diagonally upwards to the left with the other eye. Focus for a few seconds and then move your eyeballs diagonally to the bottom right to get a vision on the right-hand side. Repeat the same with the other eye. Now open your eyes and do it with both the eyes. Before you end the exercise, focus on an object placed between the center of your eyes, and take a peripheral view of it. This completes your exercise.

You will reap the benefits once you start doing the exercises. Start it right now for healthy-looking and beautiful eyes.

Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colorectal cancer is a painful disease wherein the cells of the rectum divide abnormally to form tumors and polyps. The initial symptoms often go unnoticed, but after detecting abnormalities, doctors usually suggest undergoing colorectal cancer screening.

We shall discuss the screening procedure in detail in the upcoming content.

When to take up the test?

Usually, colorectal screening is advised to men and women above 45 years of age who have had a family history.

Screening tests must also be performed when you observe the following symptoms:

  • Blood in stool
  • Itching and pain in the rectum while passing stool
  • Severe constipation
  • Tenderness in the lower abdomen
  • Abnormal stools
  • Random weight loss

Points to note:

The colorectal screening test is a must for people with inflammatory bowel disease, and it is usually performed after one year on those who have undergone surgery for colorectal cancer.
Anal flexible sigmoidoscopy must also be performed in the age group of 10-12 years on those with family history of familial adenomatous polyposis.

Objectives of Colorectal Cancer Screening

The main objective of the tests is to detect colorectal cancer early, even if symptoms are not evident. This screening ensures early diagnosis of cancer and a 100% recovery. The outcome is – “saving lives of many.” Other than cancer, they also check for polyps and other abnormalities in the rectum, which could be cured by treatment.

Types of Colorectal Cancer Screening Tests

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a longer version of sigmoidoscopy. It involves a complete analysis of the colon and the rectum with the help of a colonoscope inserted via the rectum.

A camera is attached at the end of the colonoscope, which is connected to a computer outside where your doctor can view the condition of your colon and rectum. During this process, a sample can be collected for biopsy purposes, or polyps can be removed. The entire process will take around 30 minutes, and your doctor may give a mild sedative before the test.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy

The basic procedure is the same as the colonoscopy. The only difference is that the sigmoidoscope is only 60 cms long, inserted into the rectum to view your entire rectum and part of the colon. Your doctor will not take more than 15 to 20 minutes for this. In most cases, sedatives are not given to patients, but a preliminary digital rectal exam is performed for easing the insertion of the sigmoidoscope. Colorectal cancers and polyps get easily detected with this technique.

Virtual Colonoscopy or CT Colonography

As the name suggests, an imaging technique computerized tomography (CT) is used to procure a cross-sectional or 3-D view of the large intestine and the rectum. The colon is enlarged by inserting a catheter filled with air through the rectum, which is painless. The test gives a clear picture of the abdominal organs, and it can detect how far cancer has spread in only 10 minutes.

Other Tests that are also a part of the screening:

Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT):

It is also termed as stool DNA test (sDNA) or fecal immunochemical test (FIT)- involves testing the stool for hidden blood.

Double-contrast Barium Enema:

It involves the use of barium sulfate solution pumped inside the intestine to get X-ray of the colon and intestine

How to Prepare for the Screening Tests

Do not get tensed or apprehensive about the screening test. Your doctor will examine you and then decide which test you need to undergo.

Secondly, consult with your doctor about your health problems, whether you are taking any medicines or laxatives and if you are pregnant.

Your rectum and colon should be empty. A day before the exam you may be asked to cleanse your colon with special fluids.

You may be given sedatives before the screening is done.

Possible Risks of Colorectal Cancer Screening Tests

Colorectal screening is the only way to detect cancer in the colon and rectum. However, in some cases, it can fall out for the following reasons:

False Negative:

The fecal occult blood test sometimes shows a false negative test wherein the patient has cancer, but the test shows negative.

False Positive:

This is just the opposite of the false negative. The patient is diagnosed with false cancer when she/he doesn’t have it.

In such cases, further tests are suggested for more accuracy.

During the tests, especially during colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy, the patient may undergo lower abdominal pain, anal pain, and feel the urge to pass bowel. Dizziness and nausea are some other side effects.

However, these side effects are not a significant concern. In most cases, the tests are accurate and are the best diagnostic measures to start early treatment for colorectal cancer.

Eye Exam

Eye Exam

An eye exam is needed as a part of the periodic health check-up regimen. This is because many times, the symptoms of eye disorders go unnoticed, and most commonly, it is when there's fluctuation in your glass power. Secondly, an eye exam is needed to ensure your child's healthy vision development. Several factors determine when to go for an eye exam and what kind of test will be performed.

We shall explain to you the details in the upcoming segment.

Who should undergo an eye exam?

In one sentence, we can say that anyone facing a problem with their eyes must undergo an eye exam.

Adults:

f you have a family history of vision problems, then it's quite likely that you may also need to get corrected. If you do not have any symptoms, then there's no harm in undergoing a check-up every 5-10 years between 20-30 years of age, and maybe as you grow older, you can go one in 2-3 years.
You should undergo an eye exam if you have diabetes or having blood pressure problems.

Teenagers:

Mounting pressure from studies, T.V and computer addiction gives rise to eye problems, and henceforth a check-up can be done every two years.

Children:

he first eye exam should ideally be done between 3-5 years of age to rule out the common eye problems like lazy eyes, crossed eyes, etc. Do not neglect to get your kid's eyes checked if you have a family history of eye problems.

What does an eye exam detect?

Your eye doctor will be looking for the following conditions that you might be having:

Refractive error:

to correct short-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism to give you the correct prescription for the lens.

Strabismus:

Aka crossed eye or turned eyes due to alignment problems in the eyes.

Amblyopia:

A condition wherein both eyes have different prescription power.

Eye Diseases:

To detect glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and various other problems associated with eye blood vessels.

How to Prepare Yourself for Eye Exam?

You don't have to prepare much for the test. To be on the safe side, carry your medical check-up reports, and also your previous eye check-up reports. Rest will be guided by your doctor depending upon what kind of test you will be undergoing. Let your doctor know if you have any medical history like heart attack, obesity, high blood pressure, etc. and if you are under any medication, both OTC and prescription.

What Tests are performed during Eye Exam?

Few things like that of checking the clarity of your vision, measuring eye pressure, and checking your eyes' overall health are common. Your doctor will ask you various questions regarding your eyes and on general health and then ask you to undergo some tests.

The following tests are usually performed during an eye exam.

Visual acuity test:

It's a test to check the clarity of your vision. There's a chart called Snellen chart or a screen containing alphabets, placed at a certain distance. You have to read the words separately with each naked eye. If your vision is blurred (near or far), you will be prescribed lens after another test meant for determining your eye power.

Visual field test:

As the name suggests, this test determines how you can see the complete area that comes under your visual field. Three categories are there: confrontation visual field exam, tangent screen exam, and automated perimetry.

Color vision testing:

Sometimes, your eyes are incapable of distinguishing colors. In this case, your doctor will ask you to take up a color vision test wherein you will be asked to identify the colors of several multi-colored dots and patterns.

Refraction:

In this test, a different lens will be used to correct your vision. It detects the refractive error that may be present in your eyes. You will be given the best lens through which you can get the sharpest view.

Slit-lamp examination:

In this test, a highly sensitive microscope is used that gives a magnified view of the eye structures in detail. The posterior (iris, lens, cornea, eye fluid) and the anterior (eyelids and lashes) portion could be examined with the light used.

That was all about the eye exam. We want you to understand the importance of undergoing an eye test to avoid any complications arising from negligence. In some cases, eye surgery is the only option to correct the disorder.

Probiotics and Colon Health

Probiotics and Colon Health

Much has been said about probiotics and their health benefits. Sometimes we make a mistake of consuming the supplements without knowing the purpose behind adding them in our system. So first, we shall explain to you what probiotics are.

Probiotics are live bacteria that bring about specific health benefits to the host. They are the “good” bacteria that maintain a proper microbial balance in the intestine and colon, reduce blood pressure, and improve the immunity of your body. Since we are focussing on probiotics and their impact on colon health, the information will revolve around this topic.

Which Probiotics improve colon health?

The two strains that quintessentially improve colon health are:

  • Bifidobacterium longum
  • Lactobacillus plantarum

Others that improve the gut flora can also influence colon health are:

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus
  • Lactobacillus casei
  • Streptococcus thermophilus

How do Probiotics work for colon?

The intestinal ecosystem is a repository of good as well as bad bacteria, and their balance is essential. When we consume spicy foods, junks, sweets every day in large portions, these bad bacteria become more powerful, aiding in the accumulation of free radicals and toxins in our bodies. Then the body is unable to get rid of the toxins, and they get absorbed in by the blood. This further affects enzyme activity and causes severe problems in the colon, like burning, itching, inflammation, etc. It also gives rise to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

A colon cleanses with probiotics is then suggested to get rid of such discomforts. They help regain the balance of the intestinal flora, ward off the toxins and waste materials trapped in the colon, and thoroughly cleanse the system.

The bacteria produce inhibitory compounds, like bacteriocins and form substrates (sugars, fatty acids, undigested carbs, etc.) that enhance colonizing microbes
Probiotics also evoke immune responses against harmful microbes in the colon.

Results of Probiotics on Colon Health

Probiotics bring about the following improvements in the colon

  • Protect from irritable bowel syndrome
  • Increases the immunity of colon and protects from colitis
  • Relieves from constipation
  • Eradicates allergy, inflammation, and toxins
  • The good bacteria aids in proper digestion; henceforth smooth bowel movement

How to Maintain Colon Health with Natural Probiotics?

  • Eat foods rich in soluble fibers like oats, fruits, vegetables, etc. These foods multiply the population of good bacteria in the colon
  • Have yogurt and cultured milk products like kefir and buttermilk
  • Consume probiotic dairy drinks regularly
  • Consume fermented foods like fresh miso, tempeh, sauerkraut, and kimchi. You can also have nutritional supplements containing these ingredients

Apart from these natural sources, you can also take supplements that come in the form of capsules, powders, tablets, etc. It would be best if you go for a medical check-up on noticing any problems in colon. However, these probiotics are harmless and can be taken in moderation. It’s always safe to consult a doctor before popping any pills and supplements.

Blood in Stool

Blood in Stool

Observing blood in stool all of a sudden could be scary, so you must immediately inform your doctor about it. You will be asked to undergo a stool test and various other diagnostic procedures to detect the exact reason behind it.

We shall provide you the details in the upcoming segments of this article.

Associated Symptoms

The color of your stool might change to red or maroon; a condition medically described as hematochezia. Sometimes, you may also observe blood clots in your stool. Associated symptoms include chest pain, fatigue, dizziness, rapid breathing, pale skin, fever, black stools, vomiting, weakness, etc.

Causes of Blood in Stool

The red-colored stool is a result of inflammation or infection of the lower gastrointestinal tract, or it could also arise from bleeding inside the stomach.

The reasons could be:

Anal Fissure

The tissue lining of the anus (lower rectum) tears due to pressure on the sphincter muscles of the anus, constipation, etc. and this leads to bleeding.

Intestinal Ischemia

It is a disorder in which the lower part of the intestine gets damaged due to the cut of blood supply. This causes internal bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, which comes out through the anus.
Hemorrhoids: The blood vessels of the anus become swollen. It's more common during pregnancy and post-childbirth. Hemorrhoids cause pain and itching in the rectum, and blood in stools is one of the symptoms of hemorrhoids.

Diverticulitis

It is a condition wherein pouches develop from the intestine's inner lining (diverticulosis). Blood is observed in the stool when these protruding sacks become inflamed.

Other Reasons

Colon Cancer

cancerous polyps grow in the colon (large intestine), or it might also develop in the rectum
Colitis: Inflammatory bowel disease or infection of the colon, ulcerative colitis are some conditions wherein blood in stool is observed

Peptic Ulcers

Bacteria like Helicobacter pylori often invade the lining of the stomach due to an overdose of anti-inflammatory drugs. This leads to ulcers in the stomach.

Diagnosis of Blood in Stool

Your doctor will ask you several questions about your health and lifestyle and also about medical history.
The following tests are performed by doctors to detect the exact reason.

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD):

In this process, a flexible endoscope with a small camera at its end is inserted through the mouth to examine the source of bleeding, which could be the stomach, small intestine or the lining of the esophagus. Enteroscopy is the term for detecting disorders in the small intestine.

Colonoscopy:

It's a similar procedure like EGD, but the colonoscope is inserted through the rectum to detect underlying disorders of the colon or the large intestine and also in the rectum.

Stool Culture:

The specimen of the stool is collected from the patient to culture. The test detects organisms that might be responsible for inflaming the gastrointestinal tract.

Barium X-ray:

Your doctor advises you to swallow barium, or he might insert through the rectum. This makes the digestive tract visible on being X-rayed, and thus any inflammation can be detected.

Radionuclide scanning:

use of radioactive substances inside the vein to detect the source of bleeding. The digestive tract is scanned with a camera to find out the bleeding point.

Laparotomy:

It's a complete surgical procedure done when other diagnostic tests fail. The abdomen is openly operated to detect the disorder.

Angiography:

A dye is inserted in the vein to make the blood vessels easily visible to X-ray. If there's bleeding inside the vein, the dye will leak out from that site.

When to see a doctor?

When you notice even a pinch of blood in your stool or on tissue paper, please visit the doctor. If you have already diagnosed with ulcers, hemorrhoids, or colon cancer, you must consult your doctor about the bleeding and get proper treatment done. In any case, you should not neglect it.

Treatments for Blood in Stool

The treatment is dependent absolutely on the severity of the symptoms and the cause behind the abnormality. Some common treatments doctors usually suggest are:

  • Anti-acid medications to heal the ulcers.
  • Antibiotics and immunosuppressant drugs for treating inflammatory bowel disease and other types of colon infections.
  • Radiation therapy may be recommended to remove cancerous polyps.
  • Surgery is an option to treat anal fissures and vein abnormalities.
  • Treatment is known as "interventional radiography embolization" is performed to block bleeding veins.
  • A blood transfusion may be required if too much blood has passed out from the body.

Therefore, we suggest you get yourself diagnosed properly and get the correct treatment to heal your body quickly.

HPV Vaccine for cervical cancer

HPV Vaccine for cervical cancer

HPV infection

HPV- Human papillomavirus is the primary causative agent of the HPV infection. HPV infection is sexually transmitted, and it affects the genital areas of both men and women, which could be the anus, cervix, vagina, vulva, and penis. The potential health threats posed by this virus could be genital warts, cervical cancer in women, and other types of genital cancer.

The symptoms of the HPV infection in women go unnoticed initially, however later, they gain prominence with abnormal vaginal bleeding during periods, sex, and even after menopause.

A brief on HPV Vaccine:

The only means by which HPV infection can be prevented is through vaccination. Primarily two HPV vaccines are available, viz—Cervarix and Gardasil, which are safe and effective. The vaccine is given to boys and girls 11 and 12 years old, wherein three shots are given over six months.

It’s important to note that the vaccine is given to women mainly for protecting against cervical cancer. HPV 16 and HPV 18 are the two strains of the virus that cause cervical cancer. Thus, women who have had this vaccine in childhood are immune to cervical cancer.

What are the doses of the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer?

Three doses of vaccine are necessary to offer maximum protection against the virus, and therefore, it’s a must that all doses should be completed.

It is given in the following order:

1st dose- now

2nd dose- 2 months from the first dose

3rd dose- 6 months from the first dose

Which Girls must be Immunized with the HPV vaccine, and Why?

The vaccine is most effective when given to girls/women who have not been exposed to sexual activity.

HPV vaccination begins at the age of 9. Most commonly, it’s administered to girls in the age group of 11-13 years. However, women who have missed the shots can also be given 13 through 26 years of age. This is the maximum age limit because the vaccine doesn’t immunize women against HPV cervical cancer after this age. It could be the case that once you have been exposed to multiple strains of the virus during later age (25-26), the vaccine would protect you from specific strains only.

Women who have not been immunized are highly susceptible to HPV infection, and therefore, they need to undergo cervical cancer screening tests to detect cancer and get the necessary treatment.

Which women cannot get the HPV vaccine?

As said before, getting vaccinated after the age of 26 is of no use. Similarly, the vaccine is not given to pregnant women. They can get the vaccine after delivery of the baby and if they are below 26 years of age.

Furthermore, one needs to consult with the doctor if she is suffering from any illness (e.g., thrombocytopenia), has a weak immune system, is under medication, or is allergic to latex, yeast, etc.

Side Effects of HPV vaccine for Cervical Cancer

The side effects are very normal, just like any other vaccine injection.

The local site might swell and become sore. One might suffer from low-grade fever and a little bit of dizziness.

Some more symptoms that might show up after getting the vaccine could be upper respiratory tract infection, coughing, stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and joint pain.

Any severe side effects are rare; in such cases, one might develop anaphylactic reaction due to severe allergy. Rush for medical help immediately.

How long does the protection last?

Women who have completed the three doses correctly are immunized for a lifetime. The effectiveness of the cervical cancer HPV vaccine does not weaken over time.

There should not be any question regarding the safety of the HPV vaccine for cervical cancer because they are licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are 100% safe. Also, we insist you practice safe and protected sex to reduce the chances of HPV infection. Get your daughter vaccinated in the right age to ensure immunity against cervical cancer.
